Tinubu Government Allocates N185 Billion Palliative Package to States and FCT Following Subsidy Removal

Tinubu Government Allocates N185 Billion Palliative Package to States and FCT Following Subsidy Removal

By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu

In a bid to alleviate the economic impact of the recent fuel subsidy removal, the Tinubu-led government has unveiled a comprehensive palliative plan. A total of N185 billion will be disbursed among the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to address the challenges arising from the policy change.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State made the announcement during a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, immediately following a session of the National Economic Council (NEC). This groundbreaking initiative aims to mitigate the financial strain experienced by Nigerians due to the subsidy removal.

The disbursement, slated to occur over a specific timeline, will see each state receiving N5 billion from the allocated fund. This measure seeks to empower states to initiate localised interventions and strategies that best suit their respective populations and economic conditions.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, the chairman of the NEC, presided over the meeting where the decision was made. The National Economic Council consists of the governors of all 36 states, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and various other high-ranking officials.

With this move, the Tinubu administration demonstrates a proactive approach to ameliorating the economic challenges brought about by subsidy removal. The allocation of substantial funds to the states and FCT underlines the government's commitment to providing immediate relief and fostering a more resilient and prosperous economy.

Joe and Jill Biden to Visit Wildfire-Devastated Lahaina in Hawaii

Joe and Jill Biden to Visit Wildfire-Devastated Lahaina in Hawaii

By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu

In a move aimed at showing solidarity with the residents of Lahaina, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are scheduled to travel to Hawaii next week to witness firsthand the devastating aftermath of the wildfires that swept through the town. The White House confirmed this development on Wednesday as the death toll from the disaster climbed to 110.

The official announcement was made by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who revealed that the presidential visit is set to take place on Monday. The Bidens will be received by state and local leaders upon their arrival in Maui. The primary purpose of the visit is to assess the extensive impact of the wildfires on both human life and the environment. The couple will also engage in discussions with officials regarding the ongoing recovery efforts and future plans for rehabilitation.

Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized that President Biden remains steadfast in his commitment to provide comprehensive federal assistance to aid Hawaii’s recovery. She mentioned, ‘The president continues to marshal a whole-of-government response to the deadly Maui fires, and he has committed to delivering everything that the people of Hawaii need from the federal government as they recover from this disaster.’

The president’s handling of the wildfire crisis has been met with criticism, particularly from prominent Republicans, including former President Donald Trump. In a video message, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with Biden’s response, highlighting the president’s choice to respond with ‘no comment’ when questioned by reporters about the rising death toll during the previous weekend. Trump criticised Biden’s demeanour during this response, considering it insensitive given the tragic circumstances.

The White House, however, defended Biden’s actions, pointing out his consistent communication with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Hawaii's leadership, including Governor Josh Green. While the president addressed the wildfires publicly on Tuesday, he faced further backlash for mistakenly referring to Maui as the ‘Big Island,’ which is an alternate name for the island of Hawaii—the largest of the Hawaiian Islands.

President Biden had previously expressed his intention to visit Hawaii but decided to wait until it was deemed appropriate to avoid disrupting ongoing disaster-relief operations. This trip is seen as an opportunity for the president and first lady to provide their support and condolences to the affected community and assess the situation on the ground directly.

“Baba Richie: Spreading Love, Unity, and Social Awareness Through Soul Music”

“Baba Richie: Spreading Love, Unity, and Social Awareness Through Soul Music”

By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu

What inspired you to use music as a platform to spread messages of peace, love, and unity?

For me, the inspiration behind the music I create is deeply spiritual, intertwined with my personal life experiences. I believe that music without the powerful elements of “Love, Peace, and Unity” is incomplete because they are the essence of life itself.

How do you maintain your dedication and commitment to your musical career?

To maintain dedication and faithfulness to my musical career, I let go of any distractions, especially concerning the people I collaborate and work with. I stay focused on my musical goals and aspirations, both artistically and beyond.

Could you share the creative process behind your song “My Ghetto” and how it connects with the struggles faced by those in disadvantaged communities?

The creativity behind “My Ghetto” draws from various elements, including the behavior I observe in people around me, both those living in disadvantaged communities and the privileged ones in the cities. It is disheartening to witness how some privileged individuals constantly exploit those who are yet to fulfill their dreams. This struggle is not limited to disadvantaged communities alone but exists in the very cities where the privileged reside. It highlights the fact that we are all living in a metaphorical “ghetto.”

In “My Ghetto,” you acknowledge God as the sustainer and preserver of all. Could you elaborate on the role of spirituality in your music and how it influences your artistic expression?

Certainly, in my songs, I always express gratitude and honour to Jah, I mean God, because life itself lacks meaning without the presence of God. Even in our worldly “Ghetto” where we reside and exist, it is God who sustains life. Therefore, I find it crucial to infuse my artistic expression with spiritual influence. It is all about relying on God.

With a dedicated fan base of over 100 supporters, how does their support impact your motivation and drive as an artist?

Their support has an immense impact on me as an artist. The energy and encouragement I receive from my fans have fostered positive motivation throughout the years and propelled me forward. Their presence at my performances has consistently inspired me to continue pushing boundaries and striving for more. I deeply appreciate and commend their unwavering support.

Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you are excited about and would like to share with your fans?

Absolutely! There are numerous exciting projects on ground. One of them is my upcoming album, set to be released next year. This album will delve deeper into the realities of life. Additionally, I am thrilled to announce that I will be collaborating with some incredibly talented artists who are at the top of their game in the industry.

How do you ensure that your voice stands out in a highly competitive music industry, and what makes it unique?

My voice is truly unique, and I don’t believe there is any competition when it comes to my vocal style in the industry. My voice serves as a symbol of greatness and achievement, setting me apart from the rest.

What message or emotion do you hope listeners take away from “My Ghetto”?

With “My Ghetto,” I aim to evoke a sense of hope and encourage consistency in the hearts of listeners.

How do you balance the responsibility of using your music to address social issues while still creating enjoyable and engaging songs?

It’s certainly a challenge, but I do my best to strike a balance. Addressing social issues through my music can be a delicate task, as some individuals may misinterpret my message. However, I firmly believe in delivering messages that are meant for everyone, regardless of their interpretation. I strive to marry social consciousness with enjoyable and engaging musical elements in my own unique way.

What are your aspirations and goals for the future of your music career, and how do you plan to achieve them?

In the near future, I plan to produce and nurture like-minded artists under my label, “Talent House Music,” who will create extraordinary music with powerful messages. I firmly believe that the future holds brightness for me because my dreams are grounded in authenticity and positivity, ensuring a path of success.

My Mother, My Everything

 My Mother, My Everything

 By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu

All my life, I have realised that being a mother is the only job without monthly salary. No retirement, no day off, no shift, no leave, no resign, no retreat and no surrender. But, it is a job of 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is work for life.

I have discovered that no one hides pain better than a mother who is trying to survive for her children.

Whenever I look at my mum’s beautiful face I can’t help but smile and thank GOD for the gift of her. I can’t help but hug her and never let her go.

My mother has always been my inspiration. She has always been my source of strength.

As I lay on the couch in my living room one Friday morning, I recall my mother telling me about my journey into this world.

She told me that it took GOD nine months to create me. Throughout the nine months, I was in her womb swimming like little fat worm and fish. I had caused her pain but she was glad she had me in her womb. I had kicked her while in the womb, but she never got mad, instead, she smiled and rubbed her belly gently blessing me in her womb.

She told me about her cries in the labour room, about her contractions and about how I finally landed. She held me in her hands, kissed my pink cheek as tears of joy streamed down her face. She was glad because I became her Joy of Motherhood.

During my school days, my mother became an early bird. She will wake up so early in the morning depriving herself of her beautiful sleep just to get me ready for school.

She never told me this but I knew that most times my mother went hungry for my sake. She went out very early to work and came home late looking very tired and hungry. Instead of grabbing a bite, she will feed me. Instead of taking a rest, she will bath and put me to sleep. She would walk in the rains, and in the hot scorching sun for my sake.

I might not wear luxury dresses but you never fail to clothe me. You might not have brought me to high-end restaurants but you always feed me with your best home cooked food.

I might not live in a palace, but you gave me a home filled with happiness and peace.

You saved your hard earned money for my school so I would become a better someone in the future.

Mum, I might be too many things-stubborn, naughty and even silly, but I will never risk loving you. I will never trade my love for you for anything in the world.

You are my gold and diamond. Mum, I want to say thank you for loving me unconditionally, thank you for carrying me in your womb for nine months, thank you for given me sunshine and peace, thank you for holding my hands and leading me to the right track. Thank you for being my weapon shield, thank you for feeding me always, thank you for being my mother.

I love you mum-I always love you and will never grow tired of loving you. I love your warm embrace which gives me strength. I enjoy your lovely kisses and will always want it.

I pray you grow old and become a healthy grandmother of my grandchildren.

Mum, always know that no matter how old I become you’ll forever remain my mother and I will forever remain your little cute baby. I love you my precious jewel. You are my best gift and my everything.
You are a blessing that no one can replace. I pray you eat the fruit of your labour.
